Show Notes

Last week was the first episode in our new “getting started in crochet” series, where we looked at the general history of crochet. This week we are taking things a step further by looking at Lydia’s personal history with crochet, where it all began for her.

Where It All Began

It all started for Lydia early in life, back in her school years to be precise. She was always one who enjoyed using her hands to make things and so was her mom in Holland. Her mom was a great influence on her, she would often go to the market places and purchase large sheets of fabric which she would then use to knit or sow clothes for her children. This inspired Lydia even more, and with help from her mom, she started to knit. Her desire to make things was an outlet for her and the more she would knit, the greater her skill in it would become. Everyone must start somewhere, and for Lydia, that place was knitting clothes for her dolls (which nowadays is clothes for babies!)

The Rise and Fall

Since starting to knit, she found it a great way for her to stay focused, if there is ever a Bible Study or a family meeting, you can be sure she’ll be working on something. After developing her skill in knitting, she also started crochet, and found that she loved that even more, and today it is the craft she specializes in. However, even with her desire and interests in crochet and knitting and other crafts done with her hands, after having a husband and two children, it was becoming very hard for her to find the time to continue with her passion. It wasn’t until around eight years ago that she “rediscovered” her desire for this craft. I guess now that the kids are grown up, she has more time on her hands! It all started though when someone asked her if she could make them a baby outfit. After receiving some good feedback from this person, it was official, her passion was renewed, and she has been crocheting and knitting ever since.

The Future Is Bright

So where is she now? Where has all this experience taken her? Well, now she is wholly responsible for making FGG Designs the “home of the Scrub-Bee”. She has made a whopping 300+ Scrub-Bees! And, no, she isn’t a machine, these are all handmade and hand stitched! Not only is she known for her Scrub-Bees, but she has also been working behind the scenes to produce more great quality products, like our 100% wool dryer balls, or Shaun and Elisabeth’s favorite…the Baby Bear Blankets. Keep your eye on the website to see these products very soon!
