Good Friday or Bad Friday? Which is it?

Sun over mountains and treesTears flow freely while considering the circumstances surrounding this very significant day of the year. If the reader has not come to an understanding of the meaning of this day, you might find yourself caught up in the “holiday spirit” without full comprehension of the pain, sorrow and eternal significance of the days that we go through every year commonly called Easter weekend. How many young people migrate to Florida for a “big bash” because of being free from school for a few days? Probably a large majority of people hardly give a second glance to the meaning of “Good Friday”. There is much discussion as to the origin of that term. But regardless, let us give a couple of minutes to what Scripture says about this day in history.

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, – 1 Corinthians 15:3

Bad Friday

The term “death” basically carries with it a negative thought. Pain, sorrow, loss are all words that are often associated with death. Mankind struggles with thinking “positive thoughts” associated with death. Yet, there are several positive things that relate to what Christ did. He accomplished something that no other person could – paying the penalty for sin. Christ experienced that which I deserved and would have, if it were not for Him.

and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.- 1 Corinthians 15:4

Good Friday

Resurrection is what these days are really all about. If Christ did not arise from the grave as a live person, His death would be forever forgotten in the annuls of time. Mankind has hope because Christ did not remain in the grave. Christ fulfilled the Scriptures which help to reassure us that the Bible is true and authoritative.  And because of what He did, we have (mankind) the possibility of an eternal relationship with the Lord.

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. – Romans 5:6-10

Sun rays beaming through the clouds. What would you say if a friend betrayed you?

What would you say if all your friends deserted you?

What would you say if a friend disowned you and called down curses on you?

What would you say for a person who put a crown of thorns on your head?

What would you say for a person who beat you with a whip?

What would you say for a person who hung you on a cross?

What would you say for a person who drove spikes in your hands and feet?

What would you say for a person who drove a spear in your side?

What would you say for people who were killing you?

Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them . . . – Luke 23:34
