In Holland, they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, but being part of an American family, we would still celebrate it. As far as I can remember, we would have family and close friends join us in the celebration. The time together was always very enjoyable; the weather nice and cold, which, I must say, I miss. Currently, in Southern California, it is still 75+ degrees. Phew!
In California
Despite it being different – warm, no real four-season weather here in SoCal, the time together with family still remains very special. We gather around a large table (since most years we have 14+ people) where we share memories, laughter, and fellowship. One of the men always shares something from Scripture with which to challenge us. Before we leave the table, we would sing a song or two and share the things for which we are thankful. I love this time.
My Favorite Things
My most favorite thing about it all is the time we get to spend together with the entire family. With everyone’s schedules always so full, a day like this is a relaxing and enjoyable day ‘away.’ The food that the women in our family prepare is not only delicious but all homemade (from scratch)! My favorite dish would be my Grandma’s sweet potatoes. BUT WAIT! You can’t forget the dessert! Man, our homemade pies are out of this world! Apple, pecan, and pumpkin pie! The question is: which one would you like for dessert?… Hmm, me? I’ll take a little slice of them all together with a nice cup of hot coffee. Yum!
Thankfulness
One of the areas I am most thankful for is family. They are a great example of unconditional love and are very loving and supportive.
I’m also very thankful for my Church family, who love in a unique way. My pastor is such a great encouragement. He challenges us all in many ways and has been a great encouragement in my walk with Christ.
I am thankful for God’s blessings in my life. First, as previously mentioned, my family. Over the years I have come to realize that everything I own has been provided by Him for me to use. He always has, and always will take care of me!
Amen! Love your memories.
