Our final selection of questions are about our products and processes.

We will be taking a short break from blogs as there are some exciting changes taking place in the business. Follow along with us on Facebook and Instagram as we show you sneak-peeks into the upcoming changes.

In part 1 we’ll be covering the following questions:

How are your products made?

Jonathan – Grinders, files and sandpaper are the main things I use.

Lydia – Everything is made by hand.

Michael – I use multiple tools grinders, cutters, and a lathe.

Shaun – Completely by hand from raw materials.

Elisabeth – Most of my products start off with a pencil sketch that I then either burn or draw.

How do you do the thin white line just inside the picture that frames the words? (See social media images)

I use Photoshop for that design. Here’s how I do it:

Step 1 – Create a new layer above your main image.
Step 2 – Grab your rectangular marquee tool and draw out a shape. (I hold down shift while dragging to keep my shape perfectly square.)
Step 3 – Once drawn out, I go up to the menu and select Edit – Stroke.
Step 4 – For the options it’s all personal preference. I chose a white color with (I think) a 3px border.
Step 5 – Once you’ve selected your options, hit enter and voila! A nice frame on your image.

How do you come up with your designs for wood burning?

My main inspiration comes from Pinterest. Sometimes I may have a rough idea in my head, but I would then look on Pinterest for something similar drawn out in some way that I can base my design off. I’m not all that great when it comes to freestyle drawing, so I need a little help in that.

Can you provide custom sewing labels for the seamstress/sewer?

Unfortunately, we do not offer custom sewing labels. We don’t have the right equipment for that.

What are your products made of?

Currently we work with the following resources, but will be expanding soon!

Jonathan – Metal, wood, resin/acrylic, leather

Lydia – Paper, 100% wool, linen, polyester, cotton.

Michael – Stainless steel, titanium, and wood; and the inlays are crushed stone and or sand.

Shaun – Fresh, raw, green wood.

Elisabeth – Wood, cork, paper.

What does your business sell?

We have a very wide variety of unique, handmade, organic products. We have six people in the family that have their own unique products they produce from 3D greeting cards to wooden kitchen utensils, pendants, buttons, rings and so much more.

What services does your business provide?

At this point we don’t really provide any services apart from some customizing of products for clients.

What was the first item you learned to make?

Jonathan – For FGG Designs, my first products were knives to get the hang of making knives. The first official knives were carving knives for Shaun and Michael and a utility knife for my brother.

Lydia – I started making greeting cards many, many years ago but slowly developed the style and combination of embroidery with cut out 3D images.

Michael – A metal ring made of a hex nut.

Shaun – I carved a terrible looking knife.

Elisabeth – The first item I made in the business were little wooden and cork coasters.
